Family Group Conferencing seeks to address areas of prevention, rehabilitation, reintegration and reparation of harm. This program provides a continuation of the legal process in a way that enables healing and closure for all those involved. It is also an effective forum for planning and reconciliation that protects those affected by crime and builds on family and community strengths. Using a circle format, FGC brings together those impacted directly and indirectly by the offense and those involved in the offense. All parties involved in this situation will be invited to participate in the circle process. Everyone impacted by the crime will be invited to pariticipate. All individuals participating can bring a support person (family, friend, pastor). Two trained community volunteer facilitators facilitate FGC. FGC is available to young persons, aged 12-17 years of age who have committed an offense and have taken responsibility for their actions surrounding the offense. The program is voluntary for all participants. Referrals to the program can be pre-charge, post- charge and pre-sentence.
The Ministry of Children and Youth Services, Youth Justice Division, provides funding for this program. |
